9 To 5 To Freedom
I’ve just discovered, almost simultaneously, two recent web articles that go together, in the words of the sage Forrest Gump: “…like peas and carrots!”
On ChrisBlogging.com, Chris Bibey reveals much of the detail of the life of a freelance writer in a writing style as clear and simple as it is elegant. For example, just today Chris posted an article titled “Freelance Writing Income: July 2007.”
As the post title says, Chris shows his total freelance writing income for the month just finished, but he also breaks down the number of assignments he had to complete to achieve his listed total and the method by which he received payment.
Spend a little more time on his blog and you’ll find lots of useful resource references and, as he puts it: “… tips, tricks, and strategy for earning a full-time income through writing, blogging and internet marketing.”
ChrisBlogging.com is a well structured and accessible resource site you should visit if your interest is in cutting loose from the corporate life and venturing out on your own, as Chris successfully did more than three years ago. Which leads me to…
Your Free…Now What?
Well, how about telecommuting taken to its barely logical extreme. If you’re going to ditch the suit and tie and evacuate the cubicle anyway, why not just throw your laptop, multiband phone and the rest of your gizmo paraphernalia in a backpack and hit the road…
“Telecommuting, of course, is hardly a new idea. Nearly everyone knows someone who works at home. But relatively few ask the next logical question: Why stay at home? Today there may be only hundreds of - or at most a few thousand - professionals who have decided, like Page, to make their living as they see the world. Their numbers seem to be growing, but no government tracks their movements. If they weren’t well-educated and relatively affluent, they would be called vagabonds. A better term might be “white-collar nomads.”
That’s a quote from a piece I found on the Business 2.0 section of CNN.com by Chris Morrison. It’s a fascinating exploration of the mind-set and experiences of six of these “white-collar nomads” who’ve decided to take the office with them and see as much of the world as they’ve long dreamed to see.
Now, if you were a successful freelance writer like Chris B of ChrisBlogging and were close to making the decision to launch a high-tech trek then you definitely want to check out Working Nomad.com.
There are posts there dating back to September 2005, and an honest accounting of what it’s been like for “Webby,” the owner of the site and adventurer who is actually living this life right now.
In addition to all of the resources you’ll find on the site, including an ebook you can download for about $17USD that will get you started well on just such an adventure, there are many revealing accounts of the motivations, tribulations and most recently, successes achieved in this unusual lifestyle.
The last part there, the successes, has much to do with how Webby has recently achieved his dream of exceeding $10k in one month, the month of July, all from his laptop from wherever in the world he wanted to be.
If you’re as fascinated by this idea as I am, even just for the vicarious thrill of traveling the globe and making more than a decent living, all courtesy of the new online world we live in, read the article, check out the site, join the forum and of course…comment here on this fairly radical idea!
